Course Description

This course is an interactive introduction to watershed modeling and hydrological analysis utilizing ArcGIS Pro and the ArcHydro toolbox. It is intended for users with some familiarity with GIS, because it combines spatial analysis tools with hydrological theory for users to delineate watersheds, stream networks, and sub-basins. The course will teach users, through hands-on exercises, to process digital elevation models (DEMs), apply raster functions, and utilize tools in ArcHydro to simulate hydrological behavior over specified terrain. This course has everything you need to follow the workflow and replicate the results in your own work. I have provided all of the datasets and resources that are required.

Goals

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Identify basic principles of hydrology as relevant to GIS.
  • Use ArcGIS Pro and the ArcHydro tools for watershed modeling.
  • Delineate watersheds, microwatersheds, and a river network from DEM-derived flows.
  • Perform geoprocessing steps to determine flow direction and accumulation.
  • Identify sub-watershed areas and outfalls as a result of spatial analysis.
  • Create outputs and final visualizations to illustrate the process, including slope maps, and overlays.
  • Install and configure the ArcHydro tools in ArcGIS Pro.
  • Utilize the course-provided datasets to replicate hydrology workflows.

Prerequisites

  • Basic knowledge of ArcGIS Pro or equivalent GIS software.
  • Familiarity with geospatial data and raster analysis is recommended.
  • No prior experience in hydrology is required, but helpful.
