Course Description

The term environment, derived from the French word “environner” meaning to surround or encircle, refers to everything that surrounds and influences a living organism throughout its lifetime. For human beings, the environment includes not only the natural world—land (lithosphere), air (atmosphere), and water (hydrosphere), along with biological communities—but also the social, economic, political, and cultural systems that shape our existence.
Historically, early human environments consisted primarily of physical and biological elements. However, with societal advancement, the concept of environment expanded to include human-made and semi-synthetic surroundings, as well as institutions, governance systems, and patterns of development. Today, the environment is understood as an indivisible and dynamic whole—an interconnected system of physical, biological, and cultural components interacting in complex and multidimensional ways.

Goals

This course introduces environmental knowledge as a multidisciplinary field with profound relevance to every aspect of life on Earth. It explores:
  • Conservation of natural resources
  • Protection and management of biodiversity
  • Pollution control and sustainable environmental management
  • Population stabilization and ecological balance
  • Renewable and alternative energy systems
  • Environmental security and policy development
  • Clean water, sanitation, air quality, food security, and land fertility
  • Environmental laws, governance, and ethical responsibility
Students will critically examine the intricate relationships between organisms and their environments, recognizing that no living being exists in isolation. Through an ethical lens, the course analyzes how human choices impact ecosystems, societies, and future generations.
Emphasizing sustainability, justice, and moral accountability, this course equips students with the knowledge and ethical framework needed to engage with contemporary environmental challenges and contribute meaningfully to a more balanced, equitable, and sustainable world.

Prerequisites

There are no formal prerequisites for this course. It is open to students from all disciplines who have an interest in environmental issues, sustainability, ethics, and social responsibility.
However, the following will be beneficial:
  • Basic understanding of social or natural sciences
  • Interest in sustainability, environmental protection, or public policy
  • Willingness to engage in critical thinking and interdisciplinary discussion
This course is designed to be accessible while also intellectually challenging, encouraging students from diverse academic backgrounds to explore the ethical dimensions of environmental challenges.
If you would like, I can also prepare a more formal university-style prerequisite statement for curriculum approval documents.
