Task 1 (150 words, 20 minutes) is:
Content focus: You will describe, summarize or explain the visual information.
Visuals: visual data could be a bar chart, line graph, table, diagram of a process, or a map.
Your job is to:
- Paraphrase the task (or question) in your own words
- Overview the visual features listing similarities and differences, or general summary of the trends
- Support your overview with specific details and facts of the visual to further support your overview
- Structure your response to include 'introduction', 'overview' and 'main features of the visual'
- Formal tone - writing style must be an academic tone; keep it formal.
- Focus: Produce an essay responding to a view, argument or issue.
- Essay Types: You could be asked to:
- Give an opinion (agree or disagree with a statement).
- Discuss both sides of an issue.
- Explain the causes of a problem and its solutions.
- Comprehending the task: Take time to read the task prompt and make sure you understand it in its entirety.
- Structure: Organize your essay with a single introduction, body paragraphs that each have a main idea or focus, and a conclusion.
- Evidence: Provide evidence and uses examples or evidence to provide support for conclusion.
- Formal style: Use a formal academic style/tone.
- Coherence and cohesion: Provide logical and connected thinking/reasoning.
