Course Description
This course is very exploratory-based, and also it can trigger one's creativity about how to explore different properties of a material let's say a very primitive property called hardness. How would I help with a scratch test which is a very simple scratch test with which we can determine different hardness of a different material. Being a designer it's very important to understand the texture the tactile experience and weight of each material as well as its hardness property so when it comes to the practical application of choosing materials, it will definitely be more helpful than learning a textbook with this is a practical understanding to learn about each and every material property
Goals
- The biggest benefit of this course is the exploration in nature in which one is triggered to see how materials could be even understood by this interesting parameter. Following which there is an activity which we made and then demonstrated and narrated also through pictures and videos how a simple scratch test could determine a material property
- Materials like plastics rubber as the stars glass ceramic et cetera where checked for its hardness property
- Along with that we made a fixture offer on to test the scratch test and then we pulled it on the surface of each and every material the sound the kind of texture it created the marks everything was documented so one can learn about documentation of this test observations being a designer and also learn about each and every aspect of each materials when it comes to material selection this is very very important for them as an inherent knowledge
- Being a designer it is very important to not just learn about a textbook way of different materials property it is by doing one can learn physically how the material is being found in terms of hardness and can be effectively communicated with the engineering team
- Also this course will give you a comprehensive value readings of different different materials and its order of hierarchy from higher hardness to a lower hardness
- A discussion about how to interact with engineers and materials development team to confidently speak about the material choice and its manufacturing process in nutshell. It is a very important quality of a designer but many people are missing that is why I teach in my design courses about basic materials and its properties like this to make them sensitised
- How to work with your team and then find interesting elements in which you can engage your team as well as take one another help to do the entire work and share the learnings for your project and after that you can have a brainstorming with your team to make it more effective and fun at the same time.
